UN Report: Israel Has Arrested Thousands of Palestinians and Abused Them Since October 7

The United Nations Human Rights Office reports that Israeli authorities have arbitrarily and secretly detained thousands of Palestinians since the Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7 last year, subjecting them to abuse and torture. The report, published on Wednesday, states: "A large number of Palestinian men, women, children, doctors, journalists, and human rights defenders have been detained since October 7, most of whom are held without charge or trial, and in appalling conditions." According to the report: "Many detainees who were later released reported being subjected to torture or other forms of mistreatment, including severe beatings, electric shocks, forced prolonged exposure to stressful conditions, or feelings of drowning." The UN Human Rights report states that at least 53 prisoners from Gaza and the West Bank have died in Israeli custody since October 7, 2023. The report also mentions the "poor condition" of Hamas hostages in Gaza and criticizes the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank for continuing to commit "arbitrary detentions and torture or other mistreatment in the West Bank, mainly to suppress criticism and political dissent." Voice of America reached out to the Israeli mission in Geneva for comment on this report, but had not received a response before the report's publication.
