UN Reports Increase in Executions of Ukrainian Prisoners by Russia

The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine announced that the number of executions of Ukrainian prisoners by Russia has increased to a "concerning level" in recent months. On Monday, February 15, the mission stated that since the end of August last year, it has received reports of the execution of 79 Ukrainian prisoners in 24 separate reports. According to international humanitarian law, executing prisoners of war and the wounded is considered a war crime. The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission further added: "Many Ukrainian soldiers who have surrendered or been captured by the Russian army have been executed on the spot. Evidence provided by eyewitnesses also indicates the killing of wounded Ukrainian soldiers." Andriy Sybiha, Ukraine's Foreign Minister, commented on this statement, saying that the international community must respond quickly to Russia's crimes. He wrote on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter: "The horrific executions of Ukrainian prisoners by Russia show that Ukraine is facing a real monster. We need effective international legal tools and specific actions to punish the perpetrators of these crimes." The Russian Ministry of Defense declined to comment on Reuters' request for a statement on this matter. Reporters Without Borders: A prominent Ukrainian photographer has been executed by the Russian army. The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine has analyzed photos and videos containing scenes of executions and the bodies of Ukrainian prisoners and conducted detailed interviews with eyewitnesses. The mission noted that the executions occurred in areas where the Russian army is advancing. Daniele Bell, the head of this mission, stated: "Several Russian army commanders have explicitly called for inhumane treatment and even the execution of Ukrainian prisoners." The mission also added in another part of its statement that it documented the execution of a wounded and disabled Russian soldier by the Ukrainian army in 2024 but did not provide further details. The Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine also announced that it has begun investigations into the execution of dozens of its military personnel by the Russian army.
