UN Representative Expelled from Israel; UN Humanitarian Coordinator Did Not Condemn Hamas Actions

On Tuesday, the Israeli Foreign Ministry announced that it had revoked the visa of Lynn Hastings, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in the Palestinian territories, due to her refusal to condemn Hamas's actions. Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen stated that this UN representative, based in East Jerusalem, has only two weeks to leave Israeli territory. Cohen wrote on his X account: 'Someone who does not condemn the massacre of 1,200 Israelis, the abduction of the elderly and infants, horrific torture and rape, and the use of the people of Gaza as human shields, but instead condemns Israel, a democratic country defending its citizens, should not serve in the UN and will no longer have the right to enter Israel.' Hastings, while refusing to condemn Hamas's actions, explicitly criticized Israel's attack on Gaza and called for increased humanitarian aid to the region. Relations between Israel and the United Nations, which had already been strained, have further deteriorated following Hamas's attack on October 7. Israel has strongly criticized the UN's positions regarding Hamas's actions. A widespread communication blackout in Gaza has occurred amid increased bombings, coinciding with the expansion of the Israeli army's ground operations. Individuals involved in undermining peace, security, or stability in the West Bank will be barred from entering the United States. Biden stated that Hamas's refusal to release young women led to the failure of ongoing temporary ceasefire negotiations. Israel is investigating the possibility of 'sexual crimes' committed by Hamas members. Israeli operations in southern Gaza continue, with Israeli tanks entering eastern Khan Younis.
