UN Secretary-General Calls Refugees' Resilience in Facing Adversities 'Inspiring'

Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, described the resilience of refugees in facing adversities as 'inspiring' in a message on World Refugee Day. Mr. Guterres stated, 'We need a much stronger political will to establish peace so that refugees can return home in complete safety.' The United Nations is commemorating World Refugee Day this year amid rising hostility towards refugees worldwide. The aim of this day is to honor the courage and support those who have been forcibly displaced from their homes due to war, persecution, human rights violations, climate change, and other dire living conditions. This year's World Refugee Day addresses the dire situation of tens of millions of refugees, their needs, and their legal rights to receive international assistance. On this occasion, UN officials have called for concrete steps to improve the conditions of refugees and their host communities. Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, praised the Kenyan government for 'introducing innovative and inclusive policies' regarding the status of refugees during a ceremony at the Kakuma refugee camp, the largest refugee camp in the world. The theme for this year's World Refugee Day is 'Hope Away from Home,' focusing on finding solutions to give them a second chance at life. Many refugees have been in limbo for decades. Matthew Saltmarsh, the media director of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, stated, 'Refugees are often seen as passive recipients of humanitarian aid. We want to move away from this perception.' Mr. Saltmarsh told Voice of America, 'When refugees are given the opportunity to work and contribute to the community, they almost always take advantage of this opportunity and are very motivated individuals.' He added that as long as refugees remain trapped in a camp in a remote area without access to livelihoods, they will remain passive recipients of humanitarian aid. However, if they are given the opportunity to integrate into the host community, they will be able to contribute much more to society. The annual report of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees indicates that by the end of 2022, more than 108 million people were forcibly displaced, setting a record. The Russian invasion of Ukraine was the main driver of refugee flows last year. This number has since increased to over 110 million due to conflicts in Sudan. Tensions between the Sudanese army and the so-called 'Rapid Support Forces' have driven more than half a million people to neighboring countries and displaced 1.42 million people within Sudan. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees has reported that 76% of the world's refugees are not in wealthy countries but in low- and middle-income countries, with one in five refugees residing in sub-Saharan Africa. Matthew Saltmarsh noted that as the number of refugees increases, anti-refugee sentiments have also risen, leading to increased xenophobia. He also emphasized that the significant rise in the number of refugees has led to fierce competition for access to resources and funding for refugee support programs, with some of these programs, including those aiding refugees in Africa, facing severe budget shortfalls.
