UN Secretary-General Expresses Concern Over Expansion of Israeli Operations in Rafah, Southern Gaza

On Wednesday, February 7, the UN Secretary-General expressed concern during his speech at the General Assembly regarding the expansion of Israeli operations in the city of Rafah in southern Gaza, stating that this action has intensified the humanitarian crisis and could have "devastating" consequences. Antonio Guterres noted that "Rafah is a place where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have sought refuge for safety" and added, "The current situation in this area is like a human nightmare with unpredictable regional consequences." He also called for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and the unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who traveled to Israel, also expressed his concern on Wednesday during a meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior officials about the potential expansion of Israeli military operations in Rafah. Thousands of civilians have fled to the south towards Rafah due to the intensification of conflicts in northern Gaza. Rafah borders Egypt, and the crossing from this city to Egypt has been closed for months. Blinken stated that the Islamic Republic has made progress in "sabotage efforts." Palestinians expressed hope for another ceasefire. The Israeli army reported that they have destroyed a Hamas facility for rocket production, and conflicts in Gaza continue. Promises of success in Khan Younis; Gallant stated that the Israeli army will advance towards Rafah on the Egyptian border. The U.S. condemned the attack on the UN headquarters in Khan Younis; Israel suggested it might be the work of Hamas. Israeli forces are advancing in Khan Younis.
