UN Secretary-General in Munich: The Current World Order Does Not Meet Today's Human Needs

The United Nations Secretary-General said on Friday at the Munich Security Conference that the current world order does not meet today's human needs and millions of people are paying a "horrific price" for it. According to Voice of America, Antonio Guterres stated at the annual gathering on global security challenges: "Today we see countries doing whatever they want without accountability." He emphasized that "the problem is that many governments ignore these commitments" and if countries adhere to their obligations under the UN Charter, "every human on Earth will live in peace and dignity." Guterres addressed the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, stating that nothing can justify Hamas's terrorist attack on October 7, but neither does it justify Israel's military response and the "collective punishment" of Palestinians. He remarked: "The situation in Gaza is a terrible indictment of the deadlock in global relations. The level of death and destruction is shocking in itself. This war is also spreading beyond borders throughout the region and affecting global trade." He reiterated international concerns that Israel intends to carry out a full-scale ground attack on the city of Rafah in southern Gaza, which is a refuge for fleeing Palestinians and a center for humanitarian aid operations. Guterres also called on regional and global powers to pressure the parties involved in conflicts across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia to negotiate for peace. He stated that beyond current conflicts, the international community must strengthen the architecture of global peace and security to better address current threats and challenges. He noted, "Those who drafted the UN Charter did not envision the climate crisis, artificial intelligence, or cyber weapons." Prominent politicians, military officials, and diplomats from around the world have gathered for the sixtieth Munich Security Conference to discuss major issues such as the Israel-Hamas war, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and concerns about America's commitment to defending its allies. The UN reporter's claim regarding the "victims of October 7" provoked Israel's anger. Biden deemed Israel's military response in Gaza as "excessive." Israel intensified its bombing of Rafah; international efforts for a ceasefire continue. The UN Secretary-General stated: "The world has entered an 'era of chaos.'"
