UN Security Council Extends Peacekeeping Mission in Lebanon

On Wednesday, September 7, the members of the United Nations Security Council unanimously extended the mission of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for another year. The mission was set to end on Saturday, September 10, 2024. According to Reuters, the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon, established in 1978, is responsible for patrolling the border between Lebanon and Israel. The mission must be approved annually by the UN Security Council. The extension of UNIFIL's mission came just days after Hezbollah, a group supported by the Islamic Republic, and the Israeli army engaged in one of their most intense confrontations in the past ten months. This conflict has heightened concerns about the escalation of war in the region. U.S. officials and several other countries have expressed worries about the potential for further conflict in the Middle East, particularly in light of the ongoing war in Gaza. In recent months, following the outbreak of war in Gaza, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, and other armed groups have launched numerous rocket and drone attacks against Israel. These groups maintain strong ties with the governments of Iran and Syria and transfer fighters and weapons across the Syrian-Lebanese border. The war in Gaza began after a terrorist attack by Hamas militants and other Palestinian groups on Israel on October 7, 2023. Following this attack, Palestinian militants killed at least 1,200 people, most of whom were civilians, and took over 250 hostages to Gaza. After the Israeli military operations in Gaza aimed at destroying Hamas commenced, Hezbollah launched rockets into northern Israel in support of this group, leading to border clashes. Four people were injured in an attack on the UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon. Attacks on UN vehicles in southern Lebanon continue as the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah persists, resulting in forest fires in southern Lebanon due to exchanges of fire between the two parties.
