UN Warns About Consequences of Anti-Immigration Policies in Europe

A UN refugee official stated that if anti-immigration policies in European countries are intensified after the European Parliament elections, it will negatively affect the willingness of other countries around the world to accept refugees and will create chaos. Vincent Cochetel, the UNHCR's special envoy for the Mediterranean region, expressed concern on Tuesday, June 5, that the escalation of anti-immigration policies in the European Union could influence the policies of other countries that have long welcomed refugees and encourage them to reconsider their stance. He added in a press conference in Geneva, "Europe is an important model. Europe's treatment of refugees is under scrutiny. If European values regarding the protection of refugees are eroded, the same trend will occur in other parts of the world." Mr. Cochetel warned that such a change in European policy would lead to "more difficult management of migration not only towards Europe but in all other migration routes as well." This concern is raised as most polls predict that far-right anti-immigrant and extremist nationalist parties will increase their seats in the European Parliament elections, which will be held from June 7 to 10. Many European countries have tightened their immigration policies over the past decade, and the stronger presence of far-right parties in the European Parliament will undoubtedly affect the EU's approach to migrants and refugees. Vincent Cochetel emphasized that European voters need to be informed that the number of migrants and refugees currently entering the EU is "completely manageable." He reminded that European countries managed the sudden influx of millions of Ukrainian citizens fleeing after the Russian invasion "without any serious problems." He acknowledged, however, that empathy for refugees coming from nearby countries is usually greater compared to those coming from distant places and perceived as "different." For this reason, he stressed the importance of explaining to the people of Europe about refugees coming from countries like Sudan, which has been embroiled in a bloody and devastating war for over a year. He added, "European countries must prepare themselves, but not with fear and anxiety." The UNHCR special envoy for the Mediterranean region emphasized that most of the world's displaced persons, refugees, and migrants do not come to Europe. He provided a new report on the vital needs of migrants and the dangers they face on major migration routes in Africa and elsewhere. Mr. Cochetel stated, "The dangers and harsh conditions that migrants and refugees face on these routes are incredible." He called for the identification of the busiest and most dangerous migration routes and for necessary actions to protect migrants and provide them with other essential services.
