UN Warns of Escalating Conflicts in the Region: Immediate Action Needed for De-escalation

On Monday, August 15, the United Nations issued a statement calling for 'immediate' de-escalation in the Middle East. With rising concerns about potential actions and attacks by the Islamic Republic and its proxy forces in the region, and warnings from Israeli leaders about the 'heavy price' that perpetrators of such attacks will pay, Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, expressed serious concern over the risk of escalating conflicts in the Middle East and urged 'all parties and influential governments' to take immediate action to de-escalate the current 'very fragile' situation. Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden is scheduled to discuss Middle Eastern tensions with his national security team and meet with King Abdullah of Jordan on the same day. The US-Jordan talks come a day after a rare visit by Ayman Safadi, the Jordanian Foreign Minister, to Iran. During his visit on Sunday, August 14, Safadi called for an end to the escalation of violence in the Middle East, stating that the region should be able to live in 'peace, security, and stability.' US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin reiterated on Sunday in a conversation with his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant the 'unwavering support of the United States for Israel's security and its right to defend itself against threats from the Iranian regime' and its proxy forces, such as Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen. The Pentagon announced that the two sides discussed the repositioning of US forces in the region, which the Department of Defense is undertaking to enhance the protection of American forces, support Israel's defense, and deter and reduce broader tensions in the region. The Pentagon had previously announced on Friday that the United States would be deploying an aircraft carrier strike group and additional air equipment and weapons to the region. Jonathan Finer, Deputy National Security Advisor at the White House, stated this week in an interview with CBS News, 'Our goal is to reduce tensions. Our goal is deterrence. Our goal is to defend Israel.' In another interview with ABC, Finer said, 'We are preparing for every possibility.' He emphasized, 'We believe that a regional war is not in anyone's interest.' These developments follow an Israeli airstrike on a building in Beirut that resulted in the death of Fouad Shukr, a senior Hezbollah commander, and the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas, in Tehran, which the Islamic Republic attributes to Israel. Earlier, the Israeli media outlet Kan reported, citing anonymous Western diplomats, that the same regional coalition that helped repel a direct missile and drone attack from the Islamic Republic in April could regroup to neutralize a potential attack. According to the report, 'intensive work' is being done on this issue, and there is a possibility that if the Islamic Republic attacks, this cooperation could happen again, as 'everyone is interested in preventing this incident from turning into a regional war.' The Pentagon announced on Friday, August 12, that it would be moving a squadron of fighter jets to the Middle East and maintaining an aircraft carrier in the region to strengthen the US military presence to assist in defending Israel and protecting American forces.
