Uncertainty Surrounds Detained Individuals in Gilan; Hooman Taheri's Mother: My Son is Deprived of Contact

Nine days after the detention of several activists and civil society members in Gilan province, Hooman Taheri's mother criticized the lack of accountability from judicial authorities and called for her son's release. Zahra Taherkhani, Hooman Taheri's mother, expressed concern about her son's situation in an Instagram post, highlighting his deprivation of contact and visitation rights. She also emphasized her son's innocence, stating that he had 'no activities' whatsoever. Hooman Taheri was previously detained eleven years ago in the case known as 'Rescuers of Camp Sarand' while traveling with a rescue group to assist earthquake victims in East Azerbaijan. On August 16, government agents arrested several women's rights activists and political activists, including Hooman Taheri, in various cities of Gilan province. The Gilan Intelligence Department claimed without providing any evidence that the detainees intended to carry out 'sabotage actions.' Recently, the mother of Jala Javaheri, a women's rights activist and one of the detainees in Gilan, also criticized the lack of information regarding her daughter's situation, including the charges against her, her place of detention, and the detaining authority. Gohar Bayat, in an interview with Shargh Network, referred to the deaths of two of her children in the Iran-Iraq War and described her daughter's activities as limited to cultural, social, and women's rights issues. Jala Javaheri's mother stated that apart from one phone call, she has no information about her daughter's condition. According to the 'Bidar Zani' website, the failure to deliver necessary medications for Jala Javaheri, who suffers from severe hand arthritis, and Forough Samiinia, who has diabetes, has increased their families' concerns. 'Bidar Zani' described this action by judicial authorities as 'deliberate procrastination' and emphasized that the Prison Organization uses this deprivation as a 'security pressure tool' against detainees and their families. According to this report, the Gilan prosecutor stated without providing details that a 'one-month detention order' has been issued for eight of the detainees 'until September 16,' and four others 'will be awaiting bail.' As the anniversary of Mahsa (Zhina) Amini's death in custody of the morality police approaches, security pressures, including the summoning and detention of civil and political activists and the families of the bereaved, have intensified. The Coordinating Council of Teachers' Trade Unions stated that the arrests are a sign of the regime's panic. The continued detention of 12 civil activists in Gilan; 'night interrogations' continue.
