Unexpected Resignation of New Zealand Prime Minister

John Key, the Prime Minister of New Zealand who has led the government for eight years, announced that he has decided to end his presidency of the Cabinet and withdraw from politics. His resignation is considered unexpected and unforeseen. On December 6, he stated, "This decision is the hardest I have ever made in my life, and I don't even know what I will do next." Key told reporters, "Leading the [National] Party and the country has been a unique experience." He also mentioned that he wants to spend more time with his wife and children. Key entered politics in 2002 as a member of the New Zealand Parliament. He then took over the leadership of the National Party, which is a center-right movement, and ultimately ended nine years of Labour Party governance in 2008 to take over the government. Key was the leader of the National Party for ten years and Prime Minister of New Zealand for eight years, leading the country through some of the toughest domestic and international challenges, such as the earthquake in Christchurch and the consequences of the economic crisis. A poll result from May this year showed that despite a decrease in popularity, his party still holds a significantly better position than the left-leaning parties, with the Labour and Green parties in second and third places, respectively. New Zealand was one of the countries that participated in the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations during Barack Obama's administration. Donald Trump, the elected President of the United States, has promised that the United States will withdraw from this agreement when he takes office. New Zealand's economy has largely benefited from globalization, with major revenue stemming from international trade, specifically with countries like Australia, the United States, China, the European Union, and Japan. This country is an island in the southwestern Pacific Ocean with a population of less than five million and a high level of education, healthcare services, quality of life, and economic freedoms.
