United Nations Calls for Continued Implementation of the JCPOA

The Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, on the anniversary of the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), welcomed the agreement reached between Tehran and the six world powers, calling for the parties to maintain their commitments and continue full implementation. According to the 'Office of the Spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations', the organization supports this agreement, describing it as a 'historic step', and welcomes the announcement of a 'strong commitment' by the parties to implement it. Farhan Haq stated that the nuclear agreement and the JCPOA benefit all countries involved in its formation and contain 'tangible benefits for the people of Iran'. Mr. Haq emphasized that this agreement underscores the importance of diplomatic actions to ensure the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program while also contributing to the promotion of security and peace in the region. The UN stated that it will continue to support the JCPOA based on Resolution 2231 and other related decisions in the Security Council. The UN Security Council had expressed support for the final agreement reached between Iran and the P5+1 group on July 20, 2015. The UN statement on the anniversary of the implementation of this agreement was issued simultaneously with a new report from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which stated that Iran has complied with another part of its commitments under the nuclear agreement with the international community and has collected and transferred hundreds of centrifuges from the Fordow facility. Donald Trump, the elected President of the United States, who will take office in a few days, is known as a critic of the nuclear agreement. He had previously stated that he would 'tear up' this deal but recently expressed that 'we will monitor the implementation of the agreement so strictly that the Iranian government will have no escape route'. The nuclear agreement is considered one of Barack Obama's legacies in U.S. foreign policy but faces staunch critics among Republicans. On the other hand, Iran has claimed in recent months that the U.S. has not fulfilled all its commitments regarding the lifting of sanctions. The U.S. government has denied these accusations. Iran, the U.S., Russia, China, France, the UK, and Germany reached an agreement in July 2015 that limited Tehran's nuclear activities while lifting international sanctions against Iran.
