United States Warns Commercial Ships in the Indian Ocean

On Monday, the United States issued a warning to commercial ships passing through the Indian Ocean. This warning came after several incidents of piracy and clashes in the Red Sea this month. According to The Hill, the U.S. Maritime Administration urged all vessels to exercise caution when navigating these waters and to be aware of active threats in the region. The warning advises ships to avoid Iranian territorial waters and Yemeni ports as much as possible and to be vigilant of small boats and drones that could pose a threat. The report states that in the event of an encounter with an Iranian attempt to seize a ship, crew members are advised to contact the U.S. Fifth Fleet. On December 6, U.S. Central Command announced that the Eisenhower Strike Group, stationed in the Red Sea, entered the Persian Gulf on Sunday, December 5, to support CENTCOM missions in the region. According to a post from CENTCOM's account on X, this strike group will ensure freedom of navigation in key international waterways, including the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman. Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen seized a commercial tanker linked to Israel on November 19, and a container ship owned by an Israeli billionaire was also attacked by Iranian drones last week. Republican efforts in the Senate are underway to re-list 'Iranian-backed Houthis' as a terrorist group. The Pentagon stated that the attempt to seize a commercial tanker in the Gulf of Aden was the work of Somali pirates. Officials say that following the U.S. Navy's response, the seized tanker is safe. An Israeli ship was attacked by a 'suspicious Iranian drone' in the Indian Ocean. An American official stated that Iran 'probably' played a role in the piracy in the Red Sea. The President of Israel described the piracy in the Red Sea as an attack on Israel and international order. The seized ship by Iranian-backed Houthis is currently in the port of Hodeidah, Yemen.
