Unprecedented Presence of American Bomber in Korean Peninsula Exercises

For the first time in seven years, the United States has deployed the B-1B strategic bomber in exercises on the Korean Peninsula. The Associated Press reported on Wednesday, June 6, that the decision to fly this long-range bomber capable of launching guided bombs was made in response to increasing tensions and provocations from Pyongyang, particularly the sending of waste balloons into the territory of its southern neighbor. The U.S. also included advanced fighter jets alongside the B-1B in these exercises. In this context, the South Korean Ministry of Defense stated that the exercise was intended to demonstrate the United States' security commitment to South Korea and to strengthen the defensive posture of the allied countries. The statement added that during the exercise, the American B-1B bomber, escorted by South Korean fighter jets, dropped bombs; an action that has not been seen since 2017. According to the report, South Korean jets also fired at exercise targets. The bomb dropped by the B-1B fighter aircraft is of the bunker-buster and guided type, munitions that can cause devastating damage to North Korea's complex network of tunnels and underground military structures. North Korea had previously described the deployment of the B-1B bomber as evidence of America's 'hostility' and had conducted missile exercises in response to the planned joint drills of Seoul and Washington. Recently, North Korea also sent hundreds of large balloons to drop animal waste, cigarette butts, and discarded batteries across South Korea. Seoul has called this action by Pyongyang 'intolerable' and has suspended a fragile military agreement with North Korea. The suspension of this agreement, reached in 2018, allows South Korea to resume activities such as broadcasting anti-Pyongyang propaganda through loudspeakers in border areas. North Korea has also recently made an unsuccessful attempt to place its second spy satellite into orbit, an action that contradicts UN resolutions against the country. Additionally, it has conducted a simulation exercise for a nuclear attack and reportedly disrupted navigation signal equipment in South Korea for a period.
