UN's Request to North Korea for Communication Channel to Reduce Conflict Risk

Reports indicate that Jeffrey Feltman, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, during his visit to Pyongyang this week, told senior North Korean officials that it is essential to immediately establish channels to prevent miscalculations and reduce the risk of conflict. According to Reuters, Jeffrey Feltman is the highest-ranking UN official to visit North Korea since 2012. The United Nations announced on Saturday, December 9, in a statement following the visit of the Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs to North Korea, that Mr. Feltman met with Ri Yong-ho, the Foreign Minister, and Park Myung-guk, the Deputy Foreign Minister of North Korea. The UN stated that Jeffrey Feltman emphasized the necessity of fully implementing UN resolutions and noted that the international community is committed to finding a peaceful solution to the crisis on the Korean Peninsula. According to this statement, Mr. Feltman said that the current situation can only be resolved through a diplomatic solution based on honest dialogue. The UN added that they agreed that the current conditions are the most tense and dangerous issue of peace and security in the world. North Korea continues to develop its nuclear and missile programs, disregarding UN Security Council resolutions. On December 7, North Korea tested an intercontinental ballistic missile, claiming that this missile has 'access to the entire territory of the United States' and 'is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead.' Meanwhile, North Korea expressed its willingness to reduce tensions on the Korean Peninsula in a statement published by the country's official news agency. North Korea stated that the UN, while expressing concern over the rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula, expressed its willingness to cooperate based on the UN Charter, which is centered on international peace and security, to reduce tensions in the region. North Korean officials, including their leader Kim Jong-un, have repeatedly threatened the US and its allies with a preemptive nuclear strike. US officials also state that they still believe political and diplomatic solutions may be viable, but they have emphasized that if a war breaks out, the North Korean regime will be destroyed. In this context, North Korea poses the question of when war will begin, coinciding with the start of the 'largest' air exercises by the US and South Korea. The US National Security Advisor has stated that the risk of war with North Korea increases every day.
