On Friday, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced a new military aid package worth $6 billion for Ukraine, which includes Patriot missile systems and other weapons to counter the Russian invasion. According to ABC News, Austin stated at a Pentagon press conference, "This package includes interceptor missiles for the Patriot air defense systems, anti-drone support equipment, significant amounts of artillery ammunition, air-to-ground munitions, and maintenance support services." This is the second U.S. security aid package in a week, funded by the $61 billion aid that Ukraine recently received. The delivery of air defense systems to Ukraine has been a priority for U.S. assistance and was a key topic of discussion at the Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting. Zelensky has called for the immediate delivery of at least seven Patriot systems to Ukraine, stating that these systems can save lives. The U.S. had previously covertly sent long-range missiles to Ukraine and has committed to sending more missiles to the country. Jake Sullivan, the White House National Security Advisor, announced at a press conference that a "significant number" of missiles have been sent to Ukraine and that the U.S. will send "more missiles" to the country. He emphasized that Ukraine has committed to using these missiles only within its own territory and not against Russian territory.
