Update: Seven Arrested in Three European Countries on Suspicion of Planning Terrorist Attacks

Authorities in three European countries announced on Thursday, December 14, that seven individuals, including four members of Hamas, have been arrested in Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands on suspicion of planning attacks against Jewish institutions in Europe. These arrests coincide with ongoing Israeli operations against Hamas in Gaza following the terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7 against Israeli citizens. German prosecutors stated on Thursday that four members of the Islamist group Hamas were arrested on suspicion of planning attacks against Jewish institutions in Europe. According to prosecutors, three of these individuals were arrested in Berlin and the fourth in the Netherlands. The statement indicated that two of the detainees were born in Lebanon and another is an Egyptian national. The individual arrested in Rotterdam, Netherlands, is a citizen of that country. The Dutch police announced that the arrest of the 57-year-old citizen was made at the request of German authorities and as part of a joint investigation with them. German prosecutors added that all four suspects have a history with Hamas and have close ties to the leadership of the military wing of this Islamist group. They stated that one of the two individuals born in Lebanon was tasked by Hamas leadership in Lebanon with procuring weapons. These weapons were to be transferred to Berlin for potential use in attacks against Jewish institutions. Marco Buschmann, Germany's Minister of Justice, stated, 'Following the horrific attacks by Hamas against the people of Israel, attacks against Jews in our Jewish institutions have also increased in recent weeks.' He further emphasized, 'Therefore, we must do everything we can to ensure that Jews no longer have fears about their security in our country.' Reuters reported that a Hamas official stated the group has no connection with the detainees. Sami Abu Zuhri said, 'The publication of these accusations is aimed at influencing the large demonstrations in support of Palestine in Europe.' Meanwhile, the Danish police also announced on Thursday that three individuals were arrested under the terrorism provisions of the country's criminal law and will appear for preliminary questioning in court. At the time of this report, it is unclear whether there is a connection between the arrests in Germany and the Netherlands with those in Denmark. European officials have recently warned of an increased risk of attacks by extremist Islamists amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also issued a statement quoting Mossad, claiming that Denmark has exposed 'Hamas infrastructure on European soil.' Danish police and intelligence agencies had not commented on Netanyahu's office's statement at the time of this report, and the country's Ministry of Justice also refrained from making any comments regarding this matter. The Danish Prime Minister considered the arrests to be related to the war between Israel and Hamas and stated that the expansion of this conflict to Denmark is 'completely unacceptable.' The Danish police also regarded Thursday's arrests as part of close cooperation with the country's partners and added that they targeted a network of individuals who were planning to carry out a terrorist attack. The Danish police stated that in the coming days, they will increase their presence in public places, including in Copenhagen, the capital, and Jewish locations. The Jewish community in Denmark also confirmed that they were involved in these arrests but had no information about threats against Jewish targets in Denmark.
