US Accuses Four Chinese Nationals of Smuggling Electronic Components to Iran

On Wednesday, February 1, the US Department of Justice announced that it has charged four Chinese nationals with smuggling US-made electronic components to Iran. The department stated that the Chinese nationals are accused of transferring items controlled by US export regulations through China and Hong Kong to sanctioned entities linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Iranian Ministry of Defense. According to Reuters, the United States claims that between May 2007 and July 2020, these four individuals used shell companies in China to send electronic equipment to Iran. US officials noted that the shipped components could be used in the production of drones, ballistic missile systems, and other military applications. The US Department of Justice indicated that this smuggling has resulted in the export of a 'significant amount' of dual-use goods (both civilian and military) from the US to Iran. Matthew Olsen, Assistant Attorney General for National Security, stated, 'Such efforts to illegally obtain US technology directly threaten our national security, and we will use every tool at our disposal to disrupt illegal supply chains of goods that fuel the Iranian regime's malign activities.' The US has issued arrest warrants for the accused, all of whom are fugitives. This action comes as Washington claims it will respond to a drone attack by Iran-backed militants on a US military base in Jordan that resulted in the deaths of three American soldiers. Earlier, Voice of America reported in July that the US is examining the impact of recent sanctions against Chinese networks that have supported Iran's drone program. In addition to Iran-backed militants, Russia has also used Iranian-made drones in its attacks on Ukraine. Furthermore, Biden has stated that he has decided on how to respond to the deadly attack on American soldiers. The US has sanctioned several companies in Turkey and Lebanon due to their connections with Hezbollah and the IRGC. Another commercial vessel was attacked in the Gulf of Aden, and a US official told ABC News that the US response would involve strikes on 'multiple targets.'
