US and UK Warn of War Following Escalation of Conflict Between Israel and Hezbollah

The United States and the United Kingdom expressed concern over the potential for an all-out war following the escalation of conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. John Kirby, spokesperson for the National Security Council at the White House, stated on Sunday, October 1st, that 'tensions are now much higher than a few days ago,' and David Lammy, the UK Foreign Secretary, called for an 'immediate ceasefire.' Kirby emphasized during an interview on ABC's 'This Week' that military escalation is not in Israel's interest, as border tensions between Israel and Lebanon could lead to a full-scale war. He mentioned that the United States has directly communicated this to Israeli officials and believes there is time and space to find a diplomatic solution. The White House National Security spokesperson also stressed that escalating the war benefits no one, especially the hostages that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is determined to bring home. Netanyahu stated, 'In recent days, we have dealt blows to Hezbollah that they never imagined.' Lammy also called for an 'immediate ceasefire' on Sunday, warning that increasing border tensions could lead to a full-scale war. He added, 'Our message to all parties is clear: we need an immediate ceasefire from both sides to achieve a diplomatic solution so that citizens of Israel and Lebanon can return to their homes and live in peace and security.' The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah intensified with suspicious explosions in thousands of pagers and hundreds of radios and other communication equipment of this Iran-backed force across Lebanon and parts of Syria on September 18 and 19. Following these deadly explosions, which left 39 dead and nearly 3,000 injured, an Israeli airstrike on Beirut on Friday killed 45 people, including commanders of Hezbollah's Radwan Unit. As fighting and exchanges of fire continued between the two countries, on Sunday, October 1st, Hezbollah targeted northern Israeli cities, including the port city of Haifa, with a large-scale rocket attack, causing schools and many daily activities in Israel's third-largest city and dozens of surrounding towns to come to a halt. Israel announced that it intends to focus on Hezbollah after nearly a year of border conflict that began in October 2023 following an unprecedented attack by the armed Palestinian group Hamas on Israel. Netanyahu has promised to return residents of northern Israel who have been displaced from their homes due to nearly a year of war. He stated on Sunday, October 1st, that his country has delivered 'successive blows' to Hezbollah in recent days that the group 'never imagined.' The extremist groups Hamas and Hezbollah are recognized as terrorist organizations by the United States and some of Israel's Western allies, but they are supported by the Islamic Republic of Iran and align with the Houthis in Yemen and Shiite militias in Iraq.
