US at UN Security Council: Iran's Nuclear Program is a Threat to Global Peace and Security

The United States Mission to the United Nations stated in a statement at a closed meeting of the Security Council regarding the increase of high-purity enriched uranium reserves in Iran that the Trump administration has made it clear that the Islamic Republic's nuclear program poses a threat to global peace and security. The US Permanent Mission to the UN mentioned in this closed meeting, held on Wednesday, March 13, that President Trump has made it clear that Iran's nuclear program is a threat to global peace and security, which the Security Council is responsible for safeguarding. The statement noted, 'As the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency has reported, Tehran is rapidly continuing to increase its high-enriched uranium production. Iran is also the only country in the world that produces high-purity enriched uranium without nuclear weapons, which has no valid civilian justification.' The statement reminded that 'in addition, the Iranian government continues to blatantly defy the Security Council, violate the Agency's safeguard commitments, and ignore the clear concerns of the Council and the international community. The Council must be explicit and united in addressing and condemning this brazen behavior.' The US Mission emphasized that the United States will continue to fully implement President Trump's maximum pressure strategy on the Islamic Republic, blocking Iran's access to nuclear weapons and depriving the regime of the resources it uses to advance its destabilizing activities worldwide. The UN Security Council met behind closed doors on Wednesday to discuss the increase in enriched uranium reserves in Iran, which are nearing the level suitable for nuclear weapons construction. The request for this meeting was made by six of the fifteen members of the Security Council, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, South Korea, Greece, and Panama. These countries called for the Security Council to discuss Iran's commitment to providing 'necessary information to the International Atomic Energy Agency' to 'clarify outstanding issues related to unreported nuclear materials identified at several locations in Iran.' The Iranian government has always denied its intention to build nuclear weapons, but the International Atomic Energy Agency has warned that the Islamic Republic is rapidly enriching uranium to a 'significant' level of 60%, which is close to the weapon-grade level of about 90%. A spokesperson for the US State Department told the Persian section of Voice of America that 'President Trump has made it clear that the United States is committed to preventing the Iranian government from acquiring nuclear weapons and has expressed its willingness to negotiate an agreement with Iran. If the Iranian regime does not want an agreement, the President explicitly states that it will remain under the revived maximum pressure campaign.'
