US Disrupts Russia's Covert Online Campaign to Spread Moscow's Propaganda

On Tuesday, the US Department of Justice announced that it had disrupted a covert Russian operation that used fake accounts on social media and artificial intelligence to secretly disseminate pro-Kremlin messages in the United States and abroad. This news comes four months before the US presidential elections. According to Reuters, security experts widely believe that this year's elections will be targeted by hacking and covert attempts by foreign adversaries to influence social media. Senior US officials have publicly stated that they are monitoring plans aimed at disrupting the elections. The Department of Justice obtained a court order to seize two domain names and search nearly a thousand social media accounts that are said to be related to this effort. Merrick Garland, the US Attorney General, stated that with these actions, the Department of Justice disrupted a government-backed AI-based propaganda campaign from Russia. This is the first time the US government has accused a foreign government of using artificial intelligence in such a campaign. Several accounts related to this issue have been blocked on the social media platform X. They primarily posted messages in support of the Kremlin and against Ukraine. The US government is conducting investigations with Dutch officials regarding this matter. Experts have indicated that this campaign was executed from a server in the Netherlands. The US National Intelligence Agency has warned about the Islamic Republic's cyber campaign to exploit the Gaza war, revealing a cyber attack on OpenAI and cover-ups; a threat to US national security.
