US Emphasizes the Need to Cut Islamic Republic's Support for 'Houthi Terrorism' in Yemen

The US representative to the United Nations stated that Washington has taken specific actions to reduce the capabilities of the Houthi rebel group supported by the Islamic Republic, in line with Donald Trump's executive order regarding the re-designation of Houthis as a foreign terrorist organization. Dorothy Shea said on Thursday during a Security Council meeting, "The US has designated the Houthis as a foreign terrorist organization, which was announced this week. We are also utilizing targeted sanctions to deprive this group of illegal revenues." She added that US sanctions are structured in a way that preserves the space for legitimate activities that assist Yemenis living in Houthi-controlled areas. The US representative also mentioned that Washington is taking steps to stop the Iranian government's support for 'Houthi terrorism' in accordance with the US Presidential National Security Memorandum regarding the reinstatement of Donald Trump's 'maximum pressure campaign.' Dorothy Shea warned that the United States would act against the Houthis if they resume reckless attacks in the Red Sea, surrounding waterways, and against Israel. She urged all UN members to adhere to their commitments under Security Council resolutions, which include prohibiting the provision of weapons, training, or money to the Houthis. The US representative added, "As the Security Council, we must respond to the blatant violations of our resolutions by [the Islamic Republic of] Iran through the continued arming of the Houthis." Dorothy Shea also referred to the worsening humanitarian crisis in Yemen, stating, "The Houthis' obstruction of aid deliveries has contributed to the spread of cholera last year." She condemned the illegal detentions and sham trials conducted by the Houthis. The US representative warned against any political killings in Yemen, emphasizing that the United States is closely monitoring the trial processes in Yemen. She added, "The United States will continue to counter the destabilizing actions of the Houthis and will not tolerate any attacks on its interests." Dorothy Shea concluded by stating that the people of Yemen continue to suffer from the Houthis' economic repression and detentions.
