US Expresses Concern Over Sexual Assault of Two Women in India

On Sunday, July 23, the United States expressed deep concern over reports indicating that two naked women were paraded in the streets of Manipur, in northeastern India. The sexual assault of these women, aged 21 and 19, occurred two months ago, but its dissemination on social media last week drew national and global attention. This situation has sparked public outrage in India, leading the police to arrest several individuals in connection with the incident. Public dissatisfaction prompted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to respond, calling the attack 'shameful' on Thursday, July 20, and promising a strong reaction. A spokesperson for the US State Department described the incident as 'barbaric' and 'horrific,' expressing sympathy for the victims. According to Reuters, the assault on these two women occurred in May during severe ethnic clashes between the minority 'Kuki' tribe and the majority 'Meitei' community over potential changes to economic benefits for the 'Kukis.' Following the deployment of thousands of paramilitary and army troops to the 3 million-strong state of Manipur, tensions subsided. However, shortly thereafter, killings and sporadic violence resumed, and the situation has remained tense since. Since the onset of violence in Manipur, at least 125 people have been killed, and over 40,000 have been displaced from their homes. The US State Department called for a peaceful and inclusive solution to quell the violence in Manipur and urged Indian authorities to protect all ethnic and religious groups, as well as the homes and places of worship of the people. Four men have been arrested in India after the two women were paraded naked in the streets, and opposition parties in India have formed a coalition to defeat Narendra Modi.
