US Imposes Sanctions on 7 Senior Houthi Officials

The United States has imposed sanctions on several senior officials of the Yemeni militia group 'Ansar Allah', known as the Houthis, who are supported by the Islamic Republic. Tim Bruce, spokesperson for the US State Department, announced on Wednesday, March 6, that seven senior members of the Houthi militia group were sanctioned due to their roles in arms trafficking to areas controlled by the Houthis in Yemen and conducting negotiations for weapon purchases. The statement indicated that the US sanctioned a Houthi agent and his company that employed Yemeni civilians to fight for Russia in Ukraine and profited in support of Houthi operations. The State Department spokesperson stated, 'We will use all available tools to counter Houthi violence and will work with the internationally recognized government of Yemen to eliminate Houthi capabilities.' He added that the US government is committed to holding the Houthis accountable for their attempts to acquire weapons and weapon parts from the Islamic Republic, Russia, and China with the aim of threatening the security of the Red Sea. On Tuesday, March 5, the US designated the Houthi militia group, supported by the Islamic Republic, as a 'foreign terrorist organization'. Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State, emphasized that this action fulfills one of the first promises of Donald Trump, the President of the United States. In Rubio's statement, referring to Executive Order 14175, the actions of the Houthis were described as a threat to 'the security of American civilians and military personnel in the Middle East, the security of our closest regional partners, and the stability of global maritime trade.' The Secretary of State recalled hundreds of attacks carried out by this Iranian-backed Yemeni militia against commercial vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, as well as against American forces active in 'defending freedom of navigation and US regional partners'. He emphasized that while the Houthis target American and allied vessels, ships flying the Chinese flag have been safe from these attacks. Rubio considered this decision by the State Department as a demonstration of the Trump administration's commitment to 'protecting our national security interests, the safety of the American people, and the security of the United States.' He stressed the 'important role' of designating such groups as terrorist organizations 'in our fight against terrorism', calling this action an effective way to limit support for terrorist activities. Rubio previously pointed out that the Iranian regime uses every dollar it earns to finance its weapons program and support terrorism, stating that if one looks at all destabilizing actions in the Middle East, they will notice the Houthis' attacks on global shipping lines, as well as attacks by Hamas, Hezbollah, and militias in Iraq against Israel and US forces. Additionally, Michael Waltz, National Security Advisor to the President of the United States, stated on Friday, February 23, that the US is tightening its grip on the Iranian economy as part of its maximum pressure policy.
