US: Iranian Proxies Continue to Plan Attacks on American Forces

April Haines, the Director of National Intelligence of the United States, stated on Thursday, May 2, during a Senate Armed Services Committee meeting on "Global Threats" that Iranian-affiliated militants are still planning attacks on American forces in the Middle East. Haines added that although the Islamic Republic and its proxies have currently halted attacks on Americans, it is unclear how long this pause will last. He mentioned that in response to the killing of Iranian officials in Damascus by Israel, the Islamic Republic fired hundreds of weapons towards Israel. Haines further noted that the speed and intensity of cross-border attacks in northern Israel are controlled but could potentially escalate. According to him, Hezbollah does not wish to enter into a full-scale war with Israel and the United States. Regarding the Houthis, Haines stated that this group, affiliated with the Islamic Republic, has resumed its daily attacks on commercial vessels in the region and expanded it to the Indian Ocean. At the beginning of the session, Senator Jack Reed, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said that the United States is facing a "uniquely dangerous moment" in the Middle East; a moment in which the Islamic Republic of Iran seeks to exploit the chaos resulting from the war between Israel and Hamas to drive the United States out of the region. According to Senator Reed, the Islamic Republic targets U.S., Israeli, and allied positions in the region through its proxies. He also mentioned that hundreds of missile and drone attacks by the Houthis on commercial vessels in the Red Sea have disrupted half of global trade. In another part of the session, Senator Reed referred to U.S. intelligence reports stating that although the Islamic Republic likely did not have a hand in Hamas's attack on October 7 (October 15, 2023), it sought to exploit it for its own interests. He continued to ask Haines and General Jeffrey Kruz, the Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, about the potential strategy of the Islamic Republic and whether this strategy is proactive or reactive. Haines responded that while the Islamic Republic likely was not aware of the October 15 attack on Israel, it supports Hamas and provides financial and training assistance to the group. According to him, the Iranian government uses every opportunity to weaken Israel and increase its influence in the region. General Kruz similarly stated that the Iranian government supports its proxy groups as part of its overall strategy and seeks to exploit every opportunity during the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas to increase its regional influence. Iranian officials immediately praised the October 15 terrorist attack by Hamas on Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and the abduction of over 250 others to the Gaza Strip. Following the killing of seven senior commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps during an attack attributed to Israel against the Iranian consulate in Damascus on April 1 of this year, the Islamic Republic fired over 300 missiles and drones from Iranian territory towards Israel, of which approximately 99 percent were intercepted by the air defense systems of Israel, as well as the United States, France, the United Kingdom, and Jordan. In response to this unprecedented attack by the Islamic Republic, an Iranian air force base in Isfahan was targeted, which experts and observers attributed to Israel, although Israel did not make any official comments about it.
