US Launches Global Campaign to Decriminalize Homosexuality, Referencing Recent Execution in Iran

On Tuesday evening, the Trump administration's global campaign to combat the criminalization of homosexuality in several countries was launched. American officials announced this news to NBC, stating that the decision was made following the recent execution of a young gay man in Iran. According to reports, Richard Grenell, the US ambassador to Germany, is leading this campaign. He is the highest-ranking official in the Trump administration to openly identify as gay. The campaign began on Tuesday evening in Berlin, where the US embassy invited LGBTQ rights activists from across Europe for a 'strategic dinner' to devise solutions for decriminalizing homosexuality in dozens of countries, most of which are located in the Middle East, Africa, and the Caribbean. Among the countries that disregard the rights of homosexuals is the Islamic Republic of Iran. Iranian officials typically label homosexuality as a sexual deviation and deny the existence of homosexuals in Iran. For instance, former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad stated during his 2007 visit to New York at Columbia University, 'We don't have homosexuals in our country like you do.' However, a report published by the Research Center of the Iranian Parliament in June 2014 revealed that a study on 141,555 Iranian students found that 17.5% identified as gay, and 74% had sexual relations with the opposite sex. Last month, Grenell referred to the execution of a gay man in Iran as a warning to anyone who supports basic human rights. His reference may pertain to the execution of a 31-year-old Iranian man in January of this year, which was reported by the Jerusalem Post as an execution 'related to charges of violating anti-homosexuality laws.' The source of this news includes the Fars News Agency, which reported on January 20 that 'the divine punishment of execution for a 31-year-old convict who was sentenced to death for kidnapping and violent sodomy was carried out publicly in Kazeroon.' Last month, Grenell wrote in the publication Bill, 'This is not the first time the Islamic Republic regime has executed a gay man on false pretenses, and unfortunately, it will not be the last.' He stated that politicians, the United Nations, democratic governments, diplomats, and good people everywhere should speak out loudly about this issue. NBC reported that 'discussions about human rights issues in Iran are among the topics that enjoy widespread support in Europe and can help Europe and the US come closer together regarding Iran.' As Trump's representative, Grenell has made significant efforts in recent months to encourage European countries to withdraw from the JCPOA and to apply more pressure and sanctions on Tehran. Although the Trump administration has succeeded in rallying these European countries to pressure Iran's missile program, they remain in the nuclear agreement with Iran and have made efforts to maintain economic relations. NBC noted that while pressure on Iran regarding the violation of LGBTQ rights has increased, some Arab countries also disregard their rights. Countries in the Middle East, Africa, and the Caribbean that still consider homosexuality illegal are at the center of this Trump administration effort. An American official involved in planning this event stated, 'It is concerning that in the 21st century, about 70 countries have laws that criminalize and punish sexual diversity.'
