US Likely to Sanction an Israeli Army Unit; Israeli Officials Strongly Condemn

Following a report that the Biden administration intends to blacklist the "Nitzach Yehuda" battalion of the Israeli army for alleged human rights violations in the West Bank, Israeli officials condemned any sanctions against the military of their country. The Israeli Prime Minister stated in a message on his personal social media accounts: "The Israeli Defense Forces should not be sanctioned while our soldiers are fighting terrorist monsters; imposing sanctions against an Israeli army unit is the height of absurdity and a rare immorality." Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized: "The government I lead will act with all its means against this action." Benny Gantz, Israel's Minister of War, also criticized the Biden administration's potential decision to sanction the "Nitzach Yehuda" battalion, calling this infantry unit an "integral part" of the Israeli Defense Forces and wrote in a post on social media platform X: "The Israeli government has a strong and independent judiciary that carefully assesses any claims of violations or deviations from the army's rules and regulations, and does not need a foreign decision." Gantz added: "I appreciate our American friends, but the decision to impose sanctions against an Israeli army unit and its soldiers creates a dangerous precedent and sends the wrong message to our common enemies during wartime." Axios news reported that on April 20, the US Secretary of State is likely to announce sanctions against an Israeli army battalion for "human rights violations" in the occupied territories of the West Bank. According to the report, three informed sources stated that members of the "Nitzach Yehuda" battalion of the Israeli army would be barred from receiving any military aid from the United States due to these sanctions. This is the first time the US is considering sanctions against an Israeli army unit.
