US Navy Shoots Down Houthi Drone

On Wednesday, the US Navy shot down a Houthi drone that had been launched from Yemen. According to Reuters, a US defense official, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that the USS Mason was engaged in responding to reports of an attack on a commercial vessel when it intercepted the drone. The official noted that the Houthis had attacked the commercial ship 'Aldmor Encounter' with small boats and subsequently fired two missiles at it, which did not hit the vessel. The US official reported that the 'Aldmor Encounter' sustained no damage or injuries and continued on its course. An earlier statement from a US official indicated that the attack on this ship occurred near the strategically important Bab el-Mandeb Strait. This incident comes a day after the Houthis claimed to have targeted a Norwegian-flagged tanker with a missile. Since the onset of the Hamas-Israel conflict, the Houthi rebels have been launching missiles toward Israel and attacking various ships. The Houthis, recognized as a proxy group of the Islamic Republic, have threatened to target any vessel heading toward Israel, regardless of its nationality.
