US: Ongoing Russian Attacks on Ukraine are a 'Dangerous and Unexplainable' Escalation of Tensions

Tammy Bruce, the Deputy Ambassador of the United States to the United Nations, stated that Russia's ongoing attacks on Ukraine, including its recent use of nuclear-capable missiles, represent a 'dangerous and unexplainable' escalation of tensions, even as the Trump administration collaborates with all parties to end the war. On Monday, January 22, during an emergency session of the UN Security Council, Bruce noted that thanks to recent diplomatic efforts led by the United States and President Donald Trump, 'we are now closer to an agreement than at any time since the war began.' She added, 'Nevertheless, Russia has conducted further attacks on Ukraine, including the launch of the nuclear-capable hypersonic missile, Kinzhal, targeting an area of Ukraine near the border with Poland and NATO.' Ukraine requested the session following last week's missile attacks by Russia, including the use of the powerful Kinzhal missile. This attack occurred just days after US officials expressed strong support for security guarantees for Kyiv after reaching a peace agreement with Russia during a meeting with a coalition of Ukraine's allies in Paris. Bruce condemned Russia's ongoing and intensified attacks on Ukraine's energy facilities and other civilian infrastructure, stating that these attacks mock the peace ideal, which is of utmost importance to the world and President Trump. Ukraine announced early Tuesday that Russia had launched extensive attacks against its energy facilities amid severe cold across the country. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky posted on social media that Russia used nearly 300 attack drones, 18 ballistic missiles, and seven cruise missiles in its latest assault. He mentioned that several hundred thousand households in the Kyiv region are without electricity. The US Deputy Ambassador to the UN reminded that Russia voted in favor of a Security Council resolution a year ago, which called for a swift end to the conflicts that began with Russia's full-scale invasion in March 2022. She remarked, 'I wish Russia would align its words with its actions.'
