US Reaction to North Korea: Provocative Actions Will Have 'Serious Consequences'

Following North Korea's recent missile test, which literally caused a tremor in the region, global powers reacted strongly, with the US threatening that the country's actions would have 'serious consequences.' The United States Geological Survey reported on Friday, September 9, that it recorded a tremor measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale in an area where North Korea may conduct a nuclear test. The agency also suggested that the tremor could be due to an explosion. South Korea's official news agency, Yonhap, reported that an earthquake measuring five was recorded in the area, and the likelihood that this tremor was caused by a nuclear test is increasing. Following these reports, North Korean state television officially announced that the country had successfully conducted its fifth nuclear test with military functionality. According to a South Korean military official, this is 'the strongest test that North Korea has conducted so far.' In response to this action, the US President emphasized the country's commitment to the security of its Asian allies, stating that North Korea's 'provocative' actions would have 'serious consequences' for the country. According to AFP, China, a staunch supporter of North Korea, also announced on Friday that it is 'firmly opposed' to the country's nuclear tests. The Chinese Foreign Ministry, in an official statement, urged the Democratic People's Republic of Korea to adhere to its commitment to denuclearization, respect Security Council resolutions on this matter, and refrain from any actions that would worsen the situation. Meanwhile, analysts, while describing China's official statement as strong and resolute, have suggested that it is unlikely that China will take any further action in this regard. However, it was not just these two global powers that condemned North Korea's recent nuclear test. According to AFP, on Friday, the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN's nuclear watchdog, strongly criticized North Korea's latest action. Yukiya Amano, the head of this international organization, described Pyongyang's action as 'a blatant violation of several UN Security Council resolutions' and 'disregard for the repeated demands of the international community.' Mr. Amano reminded that the Security Council condemned North Korea's previous nuclear test 'in the strongest terms' in Resolution 2270, adopted in March of this year. Pyongyang conducted the test referred to by Yukiya Amano in January 2015, which immediately drew global criticism. The number of international sanctions against North Korea has reached five since it conducted its first test in 2006. Since Kim Jong-un came to power, Pyongyang has conducted dozens of ballistic missile tests, which also violate international resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council.
