US Reaction to the Election of an Islamic Republic Representative as the UN Disarmament Commission Rapporteur

Robert Wood, the US Special Political Affairs Representative at the United Nations, reacted to the election of a representative from the Islamic Republic as the rapporteur of the UN Disarmament Commission. The US representative cited the ongoing violations of UN Security Council Resolution 2231, including ballistic missile programs and the Islamic Republic's lack of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, arguing that the Iranian government is unworthy of the UN Disarmament Commission rapporteur position due to 'violent acts,' 'human rights violations,' and 'inciting conflict.' In this context, the US deemed Iran's support for Russia's war against Ukraine and the transfer of weapons from the Islamic Republic as violations of UN arms sanctions, highlighting them as clear examples of Iran's efforts to 'undermine international peace and security.' The US representative stated, 'The Islamic Republic has provided at least 400 armed drones to Russia, which are used to target critical infrastructure and kill Ukrainian civilians, and such transfers are prohibited under UN Security Council Resolution 2231.' The statement further criticized Iran's destabilizing role in the Middle East, accusing it of exporting violence and weapons to neighboring countries, resulting in death and destruction in places like Syria, Iraq, and Yemen. The US representative emphasized that Iran's election as rapporteur of the UN Disarmament Commission undermines the credibility of the commission's work, given Iran's lack of full cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, and declared the US's opposition to the representation of Islamic Republic officials at the UN until these issues are addressed. On Thursday, the Islamic Republic of Iran was simultaneously elected as Vice President of the 78th UN General Assembly and as the rapporteur of the Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Committee of the General Assembly. Previously, the US ambassador to the UN Human Rights Council described the appointment of the Iranian ambassador as the head of the Social Assembly of the council as 'regrettable' and stated that the US was 'horrified' by this matter. Michelle Taylor, in this statement, said, 'We recognize the principle of regional rotation in such positions, but this process should not take precedence over respect for 'human rights and accountability.'
