US Reiterates: JCPOA Not on Our Agenda, Iranians Negotiated in Bad Faith

On Wednesday, June 10, the Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the White House National Security Council reiterated that the 'JCPOA' is currently not on the agenda of the United States and has fallen off the priorities of the United States. John Kirby stated: 'Officials of the Islamic Republic and their representatives have never negotiated in good faith and have shown no willingness to move in this direction, so nothing has changed, but we want to ensure that Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons.' This senior US official added that the US President still believes that diplomacy is the best option for resolving nuclear disputes with the Islamic Republic, stating: 'The popular protests in recent months inside Iran and the Islamic Republic's support for Russia's military attack on Ukraine have removed the JCPOA from the priorities of the United States.' A few days ago, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic, told the French newspaper 'Figaro' about the fate of the 'JCPOA revival negotiations': 'There are messages and verbal exchanges between us and the Americans through intermediaries in the region and Europeans, and the path of diplomacy and negotiations remains open.' Amir-Abdollahian made this claim while various officials in the US have repeatedly denied it. On the other hand, Robert Malley, the US Special Envoy for Iran, stated on Tuesday in an interview with National Public Radio (NPR) referring to previous remarks by Joe Biden, who said that if the Islamic Republic continues its efforts to build a nuclear bomb, the military option 'will be on the table,' added: 'The military option is far from our preferred option, but Biden will do whatever is necessary to ensure that Iran does not acquire a bomb.' Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency announced on Wednesday, June 10, that 'the Islamic Republic, despite agreements made last March, has only reinstalled a small portion of monitoring equipment at its nuclear facilities.' The Islamic Republic of Iran had dismantled monitoring equipment that was installed under the JCPOA at its nuclear sites last year. Agency officials say the amount of uranium enriched to 60%, 'which is suitable for nuclear weapon production,' continues to increase and is currently sufficient for the production of two nuclear bombs.
