US Response to North Korea-Russia Missile Cooperation; Three Russian Entities and One Individual Sanctioned

On Thursday, January 11, the US State Department announced that in response to the transfer and testing of ballistic missiles from North Korea to Russia, three Russian entities and one individual associated with this transfer have been sanctioned. According to the US State Department, the Vladimirivka Advanced Weapons and Research Complex, which is involved in missile testing, the Ashuluk test range, a Russian missile testing area, the 'Unit State Airline' joint-stock company, a state-owned enterprise that collaborates with the Russian Air Force in providing commercial air transport services, and Vladimir Vladimirovich Mikichik, the director-general of 'Unit State Airline,' have been added to the US sanctions list due to their involvement in the transfer of North Korean ballistic missiles to Russia. The US Secretary of State stated in a statement: 'The transfer of North Korean ballistic missiles to Russia supports Russia's aggressive war, exacerbating the suffering of the Ukrainian people and undermining the global missile non-proliferation regime.' Antony Blinken added: 'The United States will continue to closely monitor any Russian support to North Korea in exchange for these weapons and will use all available tools to identify and expose individuals and entities involved in the transfer of weapons between North Korea and Russia and will plan for subsequent actions.' At least 48 countries, including the US, condemned the transfer of North Korean ballistic missiles to Russia and Moscow's use of these missiles against Ukrainian cities on December 30, 2023, and January 2, 2024, in a strongly worded statement issued on January 9. These countries expressed concern over the security implications of Russia-North Korea cooperation for Europe, the Korean Peninsula, the Indian Ocean region, the Pacific, and globally, stating that the transfer of ballistic missiles or any related weapons and materials from North Korea to Russia is a clear violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions, and both countries must adhere to the relevant resolutions and immediately cease all activities that violate them. Various cities in Ukraine were subjected to extensive Russian missile attacks on Friday morning, January 6, with Ukrainian officials reporting that a total of 12 people were killed and at least 60 others injured in the attacks across Kyiv, southern, western, and eastern Ukraine. Russia also attacked Ukraine with nearly three hundred missiles and over two hundred drones at the turn of the New Year and in the early days of 2024. Moscow's assault on Kharkiv involved 'S-300' missiles; Zelensky stated that the Russian army can be stopped. Sky News reported that the Islamic Republic has built a new attack drone for Russia. There has been widespread global condemnation; at least 48 countries condemned Russia's use of North Korean ballistic missiles in its attacks on Ukraine. Russia attacked Ukraine in nighttime raids with 28 drones and three missiles. Seoul warned North Korea about shelling the maritime border between the two countries. Tensions are rising on the Korean Peninsula; Seoul and Pyongyang conducted military exercises.
