US Secret Service Chief Acknowledges Agency's 'Failure' in Trump Assassination Attempt

Kimberly Cheatle, the head of the US Secret Service, acknowledged the agency's shortcomings and failures in the assassination attempt against Donald Trump during her testimony to Congress. Cheatle rejected calls for her resignation from members of both the Democratic and Republican parties, stating, 'I believe I am currently the best person to lead this agency.' On Monday, July 23, during a session of the House Oversight Committee, she said, 'We were unsuccessful. The assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump on July 23 was the most significant operational failure of the Secret Service in recent decades.' In response to Republican representatives' claims that the Secret Service failed to allocate necessary resources to secure Trump, she stated that security measures for the former president had increased prior to the assassination attempt. She added, 'The level of security measures for protecting the former president was increased long before the campaign began and gradually increased further as threats intensified.' Cheatle mentioned that the Secret Service provided the protective measures requested by Trump's campaign for the gathering on the day of the incident. Cheatle did not answer questions from committee members regarding the details of security operations on the day of the incident, stating that internal investigations into the event are ongoing. The session on Monday was the first part of legislative investigations into the assassination attempt on Donald Trump. On Wednesday, the FBI director will testify before the House Judiciary Committee. Michael Johnson, the Speaker of the House, is expected to soon introduce a bipartisan committee as a reference for investigations in this matter. Johnson had previously called for the resignation of the Secret Service chief. James Comer, a Republican representative from Kentucky and a member of the Oversight Committee, told Cheatle during the session, 'I strongly believe you should resign. The Secret Service has thousands of employees and a huge budget, but it has now become a symbol of inefficiency.' Ro Khanna, a Democratic member of the committee, also called for Cheatle's resignation, stating, 'If an assassination attempt occurs against a president, a former president, or a presidential candidate, you should resign. When an assassination attempt has occurred against a presidential candidate, you cannot continue to lead the Secret Service.' Another Democratic member of the Oversight Committee, Jerry Connolly, stated that the assassination attempt on Donald Trump underscores the intensification of division and political tension in American society. However, during the Q&A session, when Kimberly Cheatle refused to accept that the prevalence of firearms among the public, especially the type of assault rifles used in the assassination attempt against Trump, made the Secret Service's work more difficult, Connolly angrily remarked, 'With such explanations, you should not be surprised that we have doubts about your qualifications to lead the Secret Service.' In the shooting by an assailant at a Trump campaign event in Butler, Pennsylvania, the former president was injured in the ear, one attendee was killed, and another was wounded. The shooter, a 20-year-old man named Thomas Crooks, was killed by law enforcement. The motives of the assailant are still unclear.
