US Secretary of State's Efforts to End Violence Between Israelis and Palestinians

John Kerry, the United States Secretary of State, is traveling to the Middle East to meet with senior Palestinian and Israeli officials; the purpose of this trip is reported to be an effort to end the recent wave of violence in the region. According to a U.S. government official cited by Reuters, Kerry's trip is not aimed at reviving peace talks. During his upcoming visit to Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Ramallah, he will also meet with officials in the United Arab Emirates, with discussions focused on the Syrian crisis. Kerry previously met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in October, where they discussed events following tensions over the management of the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The crisis stems from attacks by some Palestinians on Israelis and the shooting and killing of a group of Palestinians by Israelis. In November, the U.S. House of Representatives suspended a $370 million aid package to the Palestinian Authority. The U.S. Secretary of State had previously called for restraint from both sides and emphasized the importance of an agreement regarding the Al-Aqsa Mosque and efforts to end the bloodshed. Tensions have escalated again in recent days, and U.S. officials have expressed concern over the situation. Among the recent casualties in Tel Aviv and the West Bank, there has been one American citizen. According to a U.S. government official, Kerry is trying to prevent the collapse of the Palestinian government and steer the situation at least towards a 'more positive path.' This official emphasized that Kerry does not intend to encourage the parties to revive the peace negotiation process. Peace talks and Washington's recent efforts to establish two states have so far yielded no results and are currently effectively stalled. The U.S. Secretary of State will urge Israeli and Palestinian leaders to take 'real steps' to restore calm. Since October, 18 Israelis have been killed in attacks by some Palestinians using knives, firearms, or vehicles, while 80 Palestinians have been killed during these attacks or in anti-Israeli protests.
