US Special Envoy to Visit Beirut to Reduce Tensions Between Hezbollah and Israel

Senior officials from the White House and Lebanon announced on Sunday that Amos Hochstein, the US special envoy, will travel to Beirut as part of his diplomatic mission aimed at reducing tensions between Hezbollah and Israel along the Lebanon-Israel border. According to Reuters, this mission follows months of tension between Israel and the Hezbollah militant group, coinciding with the Gaza war; a conflict considered the most significant confrontation between Lebanon and Israel since 2006. While Washington seeks to achieve a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas before Ramadan, Lebanese officials believe that Hochstein's visit in the coming days may be a 'sign of progress' towards securing a Gaza ceasefire. This visit comes amid recent reports from Israeli websites quoting 'Post-Arabi' that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has given Hezbollah the green light to escalate attacks against Israel if ground operations in Rafah continue. Both the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah and the Palestinian militant group Hamas are listed by the US government as foreign terrorist organizations and receive support from the Iranian government and the IRGC. Over the years, Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes against IRGC positions and Iranian proxy militants in Lebanon and Syria, with the intensity and frequency of these attacks increasing since the onset of the Gaza war. Israeli forces targeted a vehicle carrying Iranian forces from the 'Imam Hussein' brigade in Lebanon, resulting in the death of an IRGC commander and 'two Hezbollah members' in an Israeli attack on the Syrian port of Baniyas. President Joe Biden expressed concern over the complicating negotiations following a 'worrying' incident in Gaza. Regional reports indicate that the IRGC has given Hezbollah the green light to increase attacks on Israel. An Israeli attack near the Lebanon-Syria border left one dead, while airstrikes by Israel in Syria and Lebanon have reportedly killed Iranian proxy forces. The Israeli Defense Minister stated that the Islamic Republic and Hamas intend to execute the 'second part of the October 7 attack' during Ramadan.
