US State Department Deputy Spokesperson: The Islamic Republic Remains One of the 'Largest Exporters of Terrorism'

Vedant Patel, the Deputy Spokesperson for the US State Department, stated on Monday in response to a question from a reporter at the Persian section of Voice of America that the Islamic Republic remains one of the 'largest exporters of terrorism.' In response to a question about the possible role of the Islamic Republic in Hamas's decision regarding a ceasefire proposal, he noted that he could not recall any actions by the Iranian government in recent years that have been beneficial to the Palestinians. Patel continued his remarks by highlighting the US's welcome of any country's positive role in ending tensions and conflicts, stating, 'A hundred words are not worth a single deed.' He added, 'When it comes to the actions of the Iranian regime, its record is quite clear, as they remain one of the largest exporters of terrorism.' According to this US State Department official, the Iranian government continues to be a 'supporter and financier' of groups focused on destabilizing activities in the Middle East and spreading violence in the region. A Hamas official, who wished to remain anonymous, told Reuters on Sunday that a delegation from this group would travel to Cairo on Monday to discuss mechanisms for achieving a ceasefire. This statement from the Hamas official, a militia group supported by the Islamic Republic, comes as mediators are intensifying their efforts to reach an agreement and ceasefire in light of the anticipated Israeli attack on Rafah. The continuation of negotiations occurs amid increasing pressure on Israel and Hamas for a ceasefire agreement and to prevent the Israeli military from attacking Rafah, where more than half of the 2.3 million population of Gaza has sought refuge since the onset of the war. Egypt has warned that a potential Israeli military attack on Rafah in southern Gaza would have 'catastrophic consequences' for the humanitarian situation in the strip and for regional peace and security. Israel Katz, the Israeli Foreign Minister, stated on Saturday that if an agreement is reached for the release of Israeli hostages, the planned attack on Rafah, where over a million Palestinian refugees have taken shelter, could be postponed. Mahmoud Abbas, the President of the Palestinian Authority, emphasized in a speech at the World Economic Forum in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, that only the United States can prevent Israel from launching an attack on Rafah, located in southern Gaza. John Kirby, the White House National Security Council's communications advisor, stated that Israel has agreed to pay attention to US concerns regarding the attack on Rafah. According to the White House, without an appropriate and credible humanitarian plan, it cannot support operations in Rafah. Additionally, Antony Blinken, the US Secretary of State, on Monday, May 10, referred to the opening of new crossings for aid to Gaza, stating that progress has been made in delivering humanitarian assistance to Gaza, but Israel must take further actions. Blinken, in a meeting with members of the Gulf Cooperation Council in Riyadh, said that the best way to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is to establish a ceasefire.
