US: The Resignation of Haiti's Acting Prime Minister Was 'Political' and Opened the Way for Democracy

Following the participation of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in a meeting of countries known as 'CARICOM', Ariel Henry, the acting Prime Minister of Haiti, announced that he would resign. 'CARICOM' stands for the Caribbean Community. On Monday, March 12, Blinken traveled to Jamaica to attend the group's meeting aimed at ending the three-year chaotic situation in Haiti. Matthew Miller, Blinken's spokesperson, described Henry's decision to resign as 'political', stating, 'By announcing his resignation after the formation of a provisional presidential council, he (Henry) prioritized the interests of his country.' Members of this council are expected to be introduced within 48 hours. Following this, Henry's resignation will be formalized with the selection of a temporary prime minister by the council. The members of the provisional presidential council will consist of a wide range of societal sectors, including civil society, political parties, and even religious groups. Ultimately, the temporary prime minister will be responsible for conducting presidential elections. Following the assassination of the sitting president in 2021, the acting prime minister role was assigned to Henry. He is 79 years old and a neurosurgeon. He had repeatedly postponed elections, arguing that security must first be ensured. During the years Henry was in charge, armed criminal groups gained significant influence and wealth, competing with each other for power in the country. Recently, after all prisoners from two prisons managed to escape and the leader of one of the groups stated he would unite with others to overthrow the prime minister, Henry declared a state of emergency. Earlier in March, following an increase in clashes among these groups and the chaos that ensued, he traveled to Kenya to request international assistance. The escalation of conflict in his absence led him to stop in Puerto Rico, a US territory, on his way back to his country. According to Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the US State Department, international and regional consultations had been ongoing for months. Last week, the Biden administration told CARICOM leaders to prepare a power transition framework as soon as possible.
