US Travel Advisory Warns Citizens Against Travel to Iran Due to 'Terrorism Risk'

The United States Department of State has issued a warning to American citizens regarding travel to Iran, urging them to avoid the country due to the risks of terrorism, internal unrest, kidnapping, and arbitrary detentions of American citizens. The advisory states that Americans traveling to or residing in Iran may be kidnapped and detained on 'fabricated charges.' The State Department emphasized that the Islamic Republic of Iran continues to unjustly detain and imprison dual-national Iranian-American citizens, including students, journalists, traders, and academics, on charges such as espionage and threats to national security, while delaying or preventing consular access to detained Americans. The advisory also noted the responsibility claimed by ISIS for several bombings and attacks in Iran, warning of the dangers posed by extremist groups operating in the country. It stated, 'Violent extremist groups, including terrorist organizations sanctioned by the U.S. government, operate in Iran. ISIS and its affiliates have claimed responsibility for bombings and other attacks in Iran.' The statement warned of the ongoing threat of 'terrorist activities' and the risk of 'death or injury' to individuals. The U.S. government emphasized that due to the lack of diplomatic and consular relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran, it is unable to provide normal or emergency services to American citizens in Iran. The State Department mentioned that private companies coordinating 'fertility services' in Iran do not accurately depict the security situation and endanger American citizens' lives. The advisory stressed that fertility and reproductive services in Iran are conducted without oversight, and American citizens seeking such services may face long delays and administrative issues in obtaining documents for children or exiting Iran. The State Department has urged individuals intending to travel to Iran for assisted reproductive technologies (ART) or surrogacy to refer to a special page for necessary information. President Joe Biden, on September 18, welcomed the release of five dual-national prisoners and urged American citizens not to travel to Iran. Governments and NGOs worldwide accuse the Islamic Republic of using the detention of foreign and dual-national citizens as a tool for political extortion in foreign relations. Nahid Taghavi, a dual-national prisoner in Iran, was released on electronic monitoring. Discussions between the foreign ministers of Germany and the Islamic Republic regarding the fate of German prisoners in Iran are ongoing. The European Parliament has called for the Islamic Republic to end 'discrimination against women and girls' and 'hostage diplomacy.'
