USA: Negotiations Possible if North Korea Halts Nuclear and Missile Programs

James Mattis, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, stated on Thursday, November 16, that if North Korea stops its nuclear and missile tests and development, conditions for negotiations between the U.S. and that country would be created. According to Reuters, Mr. Mattis told reporters during a flight that, 'If they stop testing, stop developing their programs, and do not export weapons, the opportunity for negotiation will arise.' Although the U.S. government has indicated that all options, including military action, are on the table regarding North Korea, it has also emphasized that a diplomatic solution is the preferred option. President Donald Trump warned North Korea during his visit to Seoul last week that he is prepared to use all military capabilities to stop its attacks, while also urging North Korea to 'compromise.' Mr. Trump, who had previously described negotiations with North Korea as a waste of time, has been informed by Reuters that the North Korean government has shown little willingness to negotiate, at least until it can produce a missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead that can target U.S. soil. The last missile test by North Korea occurred about two months ago. However, U.S. officials say there are no signs that the country has halted its missile and nuclear programs. James Mattis stated that U.S. armed forces are closely monitoring and assessing why North Korea has not conducted any missile tests in the past two months. In South Korea, there is significant concern that North Korea will retaliate against any attack from the U.S. and may strike South Korea. A senior South Korean official recently said that Donald Trump should not attack North Korea under any circumstances without South Korea's agreement.
