Vance Emphasizes Protection of 'Freedom of Speech' in Trump Administration: A New Sheriff in Town

JD Vance, the U.S. Vice President, emphasized the importance of safeguarding the shared values of the United States and Europe during his speech at the Munich Security Conference on Friday, February 15. He condemned the terrorist attack that occurred in Munich on Thursday and referred to the increasing trend of uncontrolled migration worldwide in recent years as a significant challenge. Vance highlighted recent threats to the freedoms of European and American citizens, including freedom of speech, and stressed the necessity of defending democracy, asserting that under the leadership of Donald Trump, unlike the Biden administration, conditions would be different and that 'a new sheriff is in town.' He added, 'The organizers of this very conference [Munich Security] barred lawmakers representing populist parties—both left and right—from participating in this dialogue. I repeat, we should not agree with everything that people say, or fundamentally with any of their words. However, when individuals, when political leaders, represent a significant group of voters, it is our duty to at least engage in dialogue with them.' In a brief reference to the war between Russia and Ukraine, he called for a reasonable agreement between the two countries and an end to the war. The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, February 15, citing JD Vance, that if Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, does not agree to a peace deal with Ukraine that guarantees Kyiv's long-term independence, the U.S. could strike Moscow with sanctions and potential military tools. Vance stated in an interview with the newspaper, 'There are economic leverage tools, and of course, there are military leverage tools' that the United States can use against Putin. He emphasized the importance of Ukraine's independence from the United States. The Munich Security Conference is being held from Friday, February 15, to Sunday, February 17.
