Verbal Clash Between German and Turkish Officials Escalates

Following the prevention of speeches by two high-ranking Turkish officials at a gathering of Turkish nationals in Germany, verbal tensions between officials of the two countries have intensified, with Recep Tayyip Erdoğan accusing Germany of harboring Turkey's 'enemies.' According to Reuters, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated on Friday that a German-Turkish journalist is an 'agent of Germany' and a member of illegal Kurdish armed groups. Deniz Yücel, a reporter for the German newspaper Die Welt, is currently detained in Turkey. Meanwhile, a source from the German Foreign Ministry described Erdoğan's accusations as 'baseless.' According to Reuters, Bekir Bozdağ, Turkey's Minister of Justice, was scheduled to give a speech in the city of Gaggenau, but this event was canceled by local authorities on Thursday. In response to the cancellation, Bozdağ remarked, 'Let them look at their past. Old diseases have returned.' The report indicates that Erdoğan's government officials are trying to garner support from nearly 1.5 million Turks living in Germany ahead of a referendum to change the constitution. Additionally, a speech by Nihat Zeybekci, Turkey's Minister of Economy, to Turkish citizens in Germany in the city of Cologne on Sunday has also been canceled. The police stated that a gathering of Turks in the city of Fricken was also canceled. Zeybekci has said that despite the cancellation of his speeches, he will travel to Germany as planned. The Turkish Economy Minister stated, 'I will go door to door and restaurant to restaurant to meet with our citizens in Germany; no one should be worried.' Meanwhile, Angela Merkel has stated that her government played no role in the cancellation of these gatherings and speeches. Local authorities have claimed that the cancellations were made for security reasons. In the meantime, the German Foreign Ministry has called for restraint from Turkey and urged its officials to refrain from pouring 'oil on the fire.' Erdoğan accuses Western European countries of not strongly condemning last year's failed coup. However, Western European countries have expressed concern over human rights violations and the suppression of press freedom following the failed coup.
