Verbal Tensions Between Russian Representatives and Western Countries at UN Security Council Meeting

Less than two weeks before the second anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the United Nations Security Council witnessed verbal tensions between representatives of Russia and Western countries. According to the Associated Press, Russia accuses the West of sabotaging agreements that could have prevented the war in Ukraine. In response, the United States and its allies hold Moscow responsible for the war, stating that one cannot escape the fact that Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, ordered the attack on his smaller neighbor. Russian forces invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, occupying parts of the country. The Russian ambassador to the United Nations reiterated at the Security Council meeting that the cause of the war in Ukraine was the failure to implement the Minsk agreements and was due to 'Kyiv's sabotage with Western support.' The aim of these agreements, signed about nine years ago, was to resolve tensions between Ukraine and Russian-backed separatists, which escalated ten years ago following Russia's annexation of Crimea and its support for separatists in the Donbas region of Ukraine. At the meeting on Monday, February 12, at the UN Security Council, Russia brought up the seventh anniversary of the signing of the Minsk peace plan mediated by France and Germany, and the Russian ambassador called the claims of Ukraine and Western countries regarding Russia's refusal to implement the agreements 'baseless.' Vasily Nebenzya stated that if the Minsk agreements had been implemented, the 'tragedy' that is occurring in Ukraine today would not have happened. He accused the U.S. and the West of attempting to achieve 'geopolitical goals' at the expense of Ukraine and its citizens' lives. Robert Wood, the U.S. Deputy Ambassador, countered by accusing Russia of spreading 'false stories and information' in an attempt to 'rewrite history' after invading an independent country in violation of the UN Charter. He said, 'Moscow has called on us today to express regret for the violence it started, fueled, and continues every day.' Mr. Wood told the Security Council that Russia signed the Minsk agreement but ignored all its commitments. The U.S. representative stated, 'It is Russia that has invaded, and Ukraine is merely defending its people, territorial integrity, and freedom.' Robert Wood mentioned that Russia trained the separatist movement in eastern Ukraine as its 'proxy force to undermine Ukraine's stability.' James Kariuki, the Deputy Ambassador of the UK to the UN, also stated that Russia's attack on Ukraine has shown the world that Putin has never been interested in peace. He accused Russia of using the council meeting as 'yet another attempt to distort history' and 'justify its unjustified, unnecessary, and illegal invasion.' Mr. Kariuki urged Russia to end its illegal invasion, withdraw from Ukraine, and respect the UN Charter. He emphasized that the UK will continue to stand by Ukraine and expose Russia's misinformation campaign. The Ukrainian army: 'We have destroyed 14 Iranian-made Shahed drones.' Ukraine: 'Hezbollah and the IRGC are training Russian forces to use Iranian drones.' Ukraine: 'Russia is using Elon Musk's Starlink in occupied areas.' Ukraine and Russia claimed to have shot down each other's drones. A UN committee accused Russia of violating the rights of Ukrainian children. The UN Secretary-General stated: 'The world has entered an era of chaos.'
