Victory Rally in Baltimore Following Indictment of Six Police Officers

Gray's death, resulting from spinal and neck injuries sustained ten days prior, sparked protests in various cities across the United States, with violent incidents occurring in Baltimore. Freddie Gray was arrested on April 12 and fell into a coma during transport to the police station, dying a week later in the hospital. According to NPR, the protest on Saturday began at Gilmore Homes, the neighborhood where Gray was arrested, and then demonstrators marched towards City Hall. Reports indicate that after the Baltimore State's Attorney announced the charges against the six officers for involuntary manslaughter, some citizens celebrated in the streets of Baltimore on Friday evening. Meanwhile, Elijah Cummings, a U.S. Congressman from the area where Freddie Gray was arrested, welcomed the charges against the six officers. However, the Baltimore Police Union criticized the State's Attorney's decision as "hasty." Michael Davis, a lawyer for the police union, stated that the officers did not commit any wrongdoing but were performing their duties, asserting that the victim's injuries were not due to police action. In this context, former President Barack Obama commented on Friday after the State's Attorney's statements regarding Freddie Gray's death, saying that it is of vital importance to clarify the facts and understand what happened to Freddie Gray. Obama added that while it is not his role to interfere in the judicial process, he can call for justice to be served and for all documents to be released, ensuring that the accused have their legal rights respected. Reports indicate that plans are underway for protests in other U.S. cities such as New York, Chicago, Seattle, and Washington. Meanwhile, news networks reported that at least 50 people were arrested for violating curfew regulations in Baltimore the previous night.
