Visit of British and German Foreign Ministers to Israel; Cameron: It is clear that Israel has decided to respond to the Iranian government's attack

David Cameron, the British Foreign Secretary, arrived in Israel on Wednesday morning for discussions with senior officials following the Islamic Republic's airstrike on Israel over the weekend. Britain was among the countries that assisted the Israeli army in intercepting missiles and drones fired by the Islamic Republic at Israel. Isaac Herzog, the President of Israel, confirmed Cameron's arrival by posting images on X and wrote that he had a 'warm conversation' with Cameron and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock. He continued, 'I thank you for the firm stance of Britain and Germany alongside Israel in the face of Iran's reprehensible attack.' Baerbock had previously stated that she traveled to Israel in an effort to reduce tensions in the conflict between Israel and the Islamic Republic. Cameron, speaking to reporters in Israel, said, 'It is clear that the Israelis are deciding to take action. We hope they do so in a way that minimizes escalation as much as possible.' The day before, the U.S. National Security Advisor said that the U.S. government is working with leaders from both parties in Congress and G7 countries and other allies to design a comprehensive response as part of a 'coordinated retaliatory strategy' in response to the recent airstrike by the Islamic Republic on Israel. According to the White House, Jake Sullivan stated on Tuesday that the goal of this action is to hold the Islamic Republic accountable for its malign and destabilizing actions, emphasizing the U.S. commitment to 'action' alongside global allies and partners as well as Congress. The White House indicated that new sanctions against the Islamic Republic's missile and drone programs, along with additional sanctions against entities supporting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Ministry of Defense, are forthcoming, and the U.S. government expects allied countries to quickly follow suit with their punitive actions. The U.S. expressed concern over a potential retaliatory attack by Israel and its consequences. The U.S. announced cooperation with allies to design a 'coordinated strategy' in response to the actions of the Islamic Republic. Israel welcomed the EU's move to impose further sanctions against the IRGC and the Islamic Republic. The White House welcomed the Speaker of the House's plan to assist Israel and Ukraine but stated that action must be taken quickly. Following an emergency meeting in Brussels, the EU initiated a plan to expand sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
