Voters in Ohio Reject Republican-Supported Abortion Measure

Voters in Ohio on Tuesday, August 8, rejected a Republican-backed measure that would have made it harder to amend the state constitution to protect access to abortion. The results of this vote represent a crucial victory for abortion rights advocates. If the measure had passed, abortion rights supporters would have faced numerous challenges. Known as 'Issue 1', this measure would have raised the minimum threshold required to approve constitutional amendments in the state from '50 to 60 percent' of voter approval and imposed stricter standards for future proposals. U.S. President Joe Biden also commented on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday evening, stating, 'This action was a blatant attempt to undermine the voice of voters and weaken women's freedom to make decisions about their healthcare.' Biden added, 'The residents of Ohio spoke loudly and clearly, and democracy won tonight.' According to the Ohio governor's office, after counting over 1.2 million votes, '60 percent' of voters in Ohio said 'no' to the proposed measure. Following the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to overturn the right to abortion and leave the decision to the states, this vote was the latest state-level battle over the issue.
