Wall Street Journal Report: The Islamic Republic Has Sufficient Fuel for Nuclear Weapons, But Lacks the Will

The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, August 10, that the Islamic Republic currently possesses enough high-enriched uranium to produce several nuclear weapons but is not currently manufacturing any. According to the report citing U.S. intelligence agencies, the Iranian government is still conducting research that could put the Islamic Republic in a position to initiate a nuclear weapons program at any moment, allowing it to build its first nuclear bomb whenever it chooses. U.S. officials stated that this research could enhance Tehran's knowledge and capability to construct a nuclear weapon through computer modeling and metallurgy, while simultaneously allowing the leaders of the Islamic Republic to claim that they are pursuing the work for civilian purposes. The Wall Street Journal's intelligence assessment also indicates that public statements by Iranian leaders regarding nuclear weapons have significantly increased this year, suggesting that even if Iran does not engage in developing a nuclear bomb, it could exploit international concerns about the speed of its nuclear program in negotiations and responses to international pressures. Gary Samore, director of the Middle East Studies Center at Brandeis University and a former White House advisor during the Obama administration, stated, "The Islamic Republic has now mastered the production of high-enriched uranium." He added, "The next step for the Iranian government could be to begin nuclear weapons activities after making a political decision, which is not far-fetched given Tehran's secrecy about its intentions." Andrea Stricker, a researcher at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies in Washington, also remarked that the recently observed military activities of the Islamic Republic may be the tip of the iceberg of much more extensive activities. She added, "The United States must immediately mobilize the International Atomic Energy Agency for inspections." This report comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East between Israel and the Islamic Republic and its proxy forces, with a government that has repeatedly threatened to "wipe Israel off the map" over the past 45 years now planning a military attack on the country in response to the deaths of its allies. U.S. President Joe Biden has repeatedly stated that the United States will never allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons at any cost. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken also said last month that Iran likely "needs one or two weeks" to produce high-enriched uranium for nuclear weapons. Experts also say that the Islamic Republic currently has enough enriched uranium at various levels to supply several nuclear weapons within six months. Despite all evidence and reports, officials of the Islamic Republic continue to claim that they are pursuing their nuclear program solely for civilian purposes.
