Warning from Four U.S. Departments about the Threat of the Islamic Republic's Drone Activities

On Friday, the U.S. Departments of State, Justice, Commerce, and Treasury issued a joint advisory to warn the international community, the private sector, and the public about the threat posed by the procurement, development, and proliferation of Iranian drones. This advisory informs the private industrial sector about the key components that the Islamic Republic is seeking for the development of its drone program and the entities involved in the procurement, production, and proliferation of these drones. The advisory also provides recommendations to exporters, manufacturers, distributors, and financial institutions regarding thorough examination and effective internal controls to ensure compliance with legal requirements throughout the supply chain and to prevent unwitting involvement in activities related to Iranian drones. This advisory complements the Justice Department's actions regarding extensive sanctions, export controls, and other economic measures imposed against Russia due to its illegal invasion of Ukraine and the disruption it has caused. In this context, the Justice Department announced the hiring of 25 new prosecutors in the National Security Division to investigate and address sanctions evasion, export control violations, and similar economic crimes. The U.S. State Department also issued a statement reminding that Russia continues to attack Iranian citizens and civilian infrastructure using Iranian drones. Concurrently with the issuance of this advisory by the four departments, the White House stated that the Islamic Republic, despite deceptive claims of non-involvement, continues to fuel the devastating war in Ukraine by sending 'deadly weapons' to Russia. The drone and missile activities of the Islamic Republic have been among the most serious concerns for Western countries regarding Tehran in recent years, leading to several rounds of sanctions against the Islamic Republic by these countries. Recently, amid ongoing concerns about Iran's military programs, a number of American lawmakers introduced a bipartisan proposal to sanction a wide range of the Islamic Republic's missile and drone activities. The United States has so far imposed numerous sanctions on those involved in and supporting the Islamic Republic's military program, particularly its ballistic missile program.
