Warning of 'Terrorist Attack' During Christmas in Beijing

The embassies of the United States, France, and the United Kingdom have reported receiving information about the possibility of 'terrorist attacks' against Western citizens and tourists during the Christmas celebrations in Beijing. In recent hours, Chinese police have noticeably increased security measures in busy areas, shopping centers, and commercial districts, especially in the 'Sanlitun' neighborhood. At the same time, embassies have been warned about the potential increase in threats against foreign citizens. The Australian embassy has also taken similar measures following the heightened security protocols of European and American countries. Sanlitun is one of the most famous areas in Beijing, housing numerous cafes, bars, restaurants, shopping centers, and foreign brands. Many Western citizens residing in China either live in this neighborhood or visit it for leisure and shopping. In August, a woman in Sanlitun was attacked with a sword and killed, and the assailant also injured a French citizen. Beijing stated that the assailant 'had no specific reason for the attack.' However, attacks with knives and swords are not unprecedented in China; in a major attack in March 2014, dozens were killed and injured at a train station in Yunnan province. China labeled that attack as 'terroristic' and accused Muslim insurgents from Xinjiang of carrying it out. In addition to China, several other countries around the world have increased their security measures to counter potential terrorist attacks as the Christmas celebrations approach.
