West Asian Football; Iran Advances to Final by Defeating Iraq

The Iranian national football team advanced to the final of the West Asian Football Championship by defeating Iraq 2-1. According to the Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA), in the semi-final stage of the tournament, Iran faced its motivated opponent with a lineup including Rahmati, Vahedi Nikbakht, Badavi, Nasrati, Kabbi, Nekounam, Mobali, Gol Mohammadi, Daei, Barahani, and Alavi. The match was officiated by Omani referee Fahd Al-Rais. Both teams displayed a balanced game, with the ball mostly in the midfield throughout the match. In the 5th minute, Javad Nekounam scored the first goal for Iran, but in the 35th minute, Ahmad Abbas equalized the game. Both teams went to the locker rooms with a 1-1 draw at halftime. In the second half, Iman Mobali was substituted for Ali Karimi, allowing Iran to think about scoring more goals with Karimi's technical movements and playmaking. In the 50th minute, Ali Daei's shot hit the crossbar and went out, but in the 59th minute, Barahani scored with a header to give Iran the lead. In the final stage of the tournament, Iran will face Syria on Friday. In another semi-final match, the Syrian football team overcame Jordan to reach the final. Thus, on Friday, before the final match, Jordan and Iraq will compete in the third-place playoff.
